How to Care for Your Area Rug, Custom Rug, or Wool Rug

April 11th, 2010

A Custom Rug, Area Rug, or Oriental rug can be a striking statement to any décor.  There are a few tips for keeping your area rug in good condition for many years of wear.

1.      Turn your rug periodically to avoid worn spots in high traffic areas.
2.      Turn your rug a half turn or quarter turn so it will wear evenly over the years
3.      If a room is sunny, turn the rug several  times a year to prevent fading
4.      A good pad will keep your rug wearing longer.  Make sure the pad is cut to fit the rug, 1 ½” shorter all around.  If a pad does not fit the rug and is too short, wear spot and lines will appear over time where the pad ends.
5.      Caster cups under furniture legs will protect your rug from getting indentations.
6.       If furniture legs have left dents n the carpet, put an ice cube on the dent.  While t melts the fibers will spring back
7.      Store rugs by rolling.  Never fold a rug, as it will break the back and damage the rug
8.      Never store a rug in a plastic bag.  The fibers need to breathe.  Also don’t store rugs in a hot attic
