This is a popular Tapestry by Stanton with a traditional Acanthus leaf.  The tapestry shows up elegantly against the rich wool carpet from Prestige Mills.  The landing on these steps needed to be built on the job.  These are pie shaped steps that create a turn in a set of steps.	Finding rugs to match Oriental rugs can be challenging.  Tapestry's offer a solution.  Here the tapestry and field on the steps were matched to the oriental in the foyer.

This tapestry was also used as an inset border.  Notice the cord inset in the green outside border.  Cording used in upholstery can also be used as an unusual decorative touch.  this cord was used as an inset in the green outside border.  Cording can ALSO be used as a finished edge to a rug, instead of binding.
This fabric border was cut from a width of 54" fabric and bordering a wool sisal.  The fabric highlights the fireplace.  This technique can also be used to create depth to a room, by not ending the rug at the fireplace, but following the hearth outline. There are two room settings and the customer decided to break it up with the plain field  hown in the back.  Notice the edging of the back field has a matching plain cotton binding.

 If you are having a piece of furniture upholstered, often you can order extra fabric to border a rug for the room the piece of furniture is in, or an adjoining room.  This creates a very tailored and custom look to your decor. You will need to order the length of the rug plus 6" or a pattern repeat.  For example - If a rug is a 6 x 9, you would order 3 yd's and 6" of fabric to border this size rug.  Often a fabric will have a big repeat.  We can take the best part of the repeat and use it as a border. This can also make a stunning effect to your decor and rug.

 What is Serging? A serged edge is a continues wrap of yarn that wraps around the edge of a rug. The finished width is approxiametely. 3/8 inch.

While many companies will push serging as a better more durable look, it is my opinion after 25 years of making custom rugs, that serging gives a rug a cheap look.  I often tell customers that it looks like the inside of how clothing is finished.

 It does not look like part of the carpet and draws ones eye to the edge. Most of the higher end mills and designer carpet companies finish area rugs by binding the edges and only serge the edges when requested.  Most companies don’t offer opinions, recommendations, or advice on finishing edges.  It could be that they want to finish the rug the easiest way possible or just make the sale and will tell the client anything. Serging is an easy way to finish rugs as it goes on quickly and can hide imperfections and an uneven edge. 

At Rug Rats, we repair many serged edges where the yarns “sprout” and creates bald spots in the face of the rug.  This can happen with foot traffic, vacuuming, pet claws or faulty application.

At Rug Rats we can offer both bound and serged edges on area rugs.  Both options are the same cost, but it is our opinion that a bound edge is a much better choice in finishing your area rug.

A Custom Rug, Area Rug, or Oriental rug can be a striking statement to any décor.  There are a few tips for keeping your area rug in good condition for many years of wear.

and area are different.  Here are some guidelines that we have used over many years

of measuring and making rugs.  They are basic ideas and might not always work for your area.

E-mail Rug Rats if you have any quesions or need help with measuring for a rug.

1. When measuring for any rug, use masking tape to outline where you first think the rug should be.  Your eye can now tell how the rug will look in a room.  (When using a measuring tape, you lose perspective of your rug porportions)  The tape can be moved easily to change the size.  When you are satisfied, measure the tape area.  This technique is especially helpful in cut out foyers and hallways.
