"The interesting point about true abstract geometric design work in rugs in particular, is the fact that there was never a right way to view them. There was never a real 'top' or 'bottom' to any of these abstract designs which was ideal as floor covering, as it meant that an interior scheme would not have to be directional, as the floor could be seen as 'correct' from any angle, but more importantly it also meant that the rug could be seen as a separate design piece in its own right, independent of the interior furniture.
The 1930s saw a number of artists and designers producing abstract rug designs, many of them originating in France with Ivan da Silva Bruhns being perhaps the most accomplished. However, the American Marion Dorn produced many fine abstract rugs in Britain during the 1930s, but there was also strong contributions from Eric Bagge, Betty Joel, Ashley Havinden, Serge Chermayeff and many more.
There is something fairly timeless about these geometrically abstract rugs. They proved to be popular not only in the 1930s, but throughout the rest of the twentieth century and into the twenty first. In fact, these designs have proved the test of time so that abstract rugs are proving to be as popular today as they were originally in the 1930s" John Hopper - from The Textile Blog
