How to Choose the Right Rug for Any Room

The postage stamp rule

The single biggest mistake people make when buying a rug is going too small. A rug that’s too small floats in the middle of the room like a postage stamp and makes the whole space feel smaller than it is. After measuring over a thousand rooms, I can tell you: buy bigger than you think. When in doubt, go up a size. You’ll never regret it.

The painter's tape trick

Before you buy, grab a roll of painter’s tape and mark where you think the rug will go. You don’t need to outline the full perimeter — just mark the corners and a short strip along each side. Your eye fills in the shape. Live with the tape for a day. This works for sofas, tables, or any big furniture purchase. It’s the single easiest way to avoid an expensive return.

Keep corners out of walkways

When you tape out the rug, walk the room the way you actually use it — from kitchen to couch, front door to hallway. Make sure no corner of the rug lands in a walking path. A corner in a foot-traffic zone is a trip hazard, and it will start to curl within a few months from getting kicked. Also check for floor vents — a rug over an active vent blocks airflow.

Buying online (a hack)

If you’re ordering from Amazon or an online rug retailer, order a smaller version of the rug first (a 3×5 or 4×6) to test the colors in your actual room lighting. Rug colors look completely different in a store, a photo, and your living room. If the smaller version works, order the larger one and either keep the small one for an entryway or return it. Way easier than re-wrapping and shipping back a 9×12.

The custom-size hack most people don't know

If you need an unusual size and don’t want to pay custom-rug prices, check with local carpet stores that have a binding room. Most carry remnants — leftover pieces of high-end carpet — and will bind them into a finished rug for a fraction of the cost of a new custom rug. Wool, Berber, high-pile options you couldn’t afford new become affordable because you’re paying for binding labor, not the carpet itself.
