For more than 35 years, the question we hear most at Rug Rats is how to keep custom logo rugs, entrance mats, and carpets looking their best. The short version: vacuum regularly, blot spills quickly with mild soap and water, hose off outdoor mats, let everything dry fully, and skip harsh chemicals and machine washing so the printed logo and backing stay sharp. Below is a complete guide — routine care, deep cleaning by mat style, stain and pet-stain removal, and how to keep your colors bright for years.

Routine care

  • Vacuum high-traffic mats and rugs frequently — daily for busy entrances.
  • Shake out or sweep smaller mats to remove loose dirt and grit, which grinds down fibers over time.
  • Hose or shake off outdoor mats so dirt isn’t tracked deeper into the pile.

How to clean spills and stains

  • Blot spills with a clean cloth — don’t rub, which pushes the stain into the fibers.
  • Clean with a mild soap-and-warm-water solution, then rinse lightly and blot dry.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh solvents, which can fade the logo and weaken the backing.
  • Always test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area first.

Pet stains and odor — Sandy's natural method

For pet accidents and tough spots, here’s the natural method we’ve used for years in our own workroom and store:

Blot up the mess, then saturate the spot with white vinegar and sprinkle on baking soda — it will fizz as it lifts and deodorizes. Cover it with a dish or plate, let it dry a day or two, then sweep up and vacuum. Works on older stains too.

Other natural options:

  • DIY spot remover: 1 tsp Dawn dish soap + 3–4 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide + a couple tablespoons baking soda. Scrub in with a brush.
  • DIY degreaser: 4 tablespoons salt + 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol mixed into a paste; rub in the direction of the nap, let dry, and vacuum.
  • Lingering odor: sprinkle baking soda, let it sit a few hours or overnight, then vacuum — or use an enzymatic cleaner made for pet odors.

Prefer store-bought? Woolite OxyClean and Capture both work well. Skip bleach and ammonia.

Deep cleaning by mat style

  • WaterHog Impressions: vacuum for routine care; for heavy soiling, hose off and hang or lay flat to dry. They absorb up to 1.5 gallons of water per square yard and dry quickly.
  • SuperScrape Impressions: built for outdoor and high traffic; hose off mud and debris. Resists sunlight, oil, and chemicals.
  • Piazza indoor & outdoor rugs (→ link to Piazza product page): solution-dyed and virtually stainproof; vacuum and spot-clean, and hose off if used outdoors.
  • DigiPrint HD & Prestige (→ link to DigiPrint HD and Prestige product pages) (indoor): vacuum and spot-clean only; keep indoors and avoid saturating the printed surface.
  • Custom logo area rugs (→ /custom-rugs): vacuum and spot-clean; for a deep clean, use a carpet extractor or professional rug cleaning.

Two-mat system

The easiest way to keep floors clean is a two-mat system: an outdoor scraper mat to knock off mud and grit, plus an indoor mat to absorb moisture. Used together, the two-mat system can trap up to 85% of dirt before it reaches your floors.

What to avoid

  • Machine-washing large commercial mats — it can damage the print and rubber backing.
  • Bleach, harsh solvents, and high-heat drying.
  • Returning a mat to the floor while still damp, which can trap moisture underneath.

Keeping colors bright & restoring a faded mat

Our outdoor mats use UV-resistant, solution-dyed colors that resist fading. Most mats that look dull are simply holding built-up dirt — a thorough cleaning often restores the look. After years of heavy outdoor wear, a fresh reorder is the best fix, and we keep your design on file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vacuum it regularly and shake out smaller mats to remove loose dirt. Blot spills promptly with mild soap and warm water — never bleach or harsh solvents, which can damage the printed logo and backing. For heavier soiling on outdoor mats, hose them off and lay flat or hang to dry.
Commercial entrance mats take heavy traffic, so vacuum daily or as needed. For deeper cleaning, hose off outdoor mats like WaterHog and SuperScrape, or use a carpet extractor on indoor mats. Let the mat dry fully before placing it back to avoid trapping moisture underneath.

You can hose down and spot-clean most entrance mats, but avoid machine-washing large commercial mats — it can damage the print and the rubber backing. Shake out or vacuum smaller mats, hose off heavier dirt, and skip harsh chemicals and high heat.

Blot up the mess, saturate the spot with white vinegar, sprinkle on baking soda, cover it, and let it dry before vacuuming. For odor, sprinkle baking soda and let it sit before vacuuming, or use an enzymatic cleaner. Always test on a hidden area first and avoid bleach and ammonia.
Our outdoor mats use UV-resistant, solution-dyed colors that resist fading, and a thorough cleaning often brightens a mat that just looks dull from built-up dirt. If a mat has worn or faded after years of heavy outdoor use, a fresh replacement is the best fix — and we keep your design on file to reorder.
Vacuum high-traffic mats daily or several times a week, and deep-clean every few weeks or whenever they look soiled. Regular care keeps colors bright and extends the mat’s life.
