LaGrange College Case Study: Custom Campus Entrance Mats
CASE STUDY • HIGHER EDUCATION
Raising the Standard for Campus Entrances
A higher-ed example of how the right entrance mats elevate first impressions, wayfinding, and campus pride—and what it would take to do the same on your property.
The Story at a Glance
For colleges and universities, first impressions start the moment a prospective student and their family walk through the door. LaGrange College in Georgia wanted its highest-traffic entrances—admissions, athletics, and other campus arrival points—to do more than protect interior floors. The entryways needed to welcome visitors, reinforce school pride, and feel as polished as the experience waiting on the other side of the door.
LaGrange addressed it with a coordinated mat program across campus—a public example of what these product lines can do in a higher-ed setting. Rug Rats has been crafting custom logo mats and rugs since 1987, working with the same American mills to deliver these product lines (WaterHog Impressions, SuperScrape Impressions, DigiPrint HD, and custom shapes) to schools, athletics departments, lobbies, and government facilities across the country.
THE CHALLENGE
Four Problems at the Front Door
Before installing branded mats, LaGrange faced a familiar set of issues at high-traffic entry points—the same ones we hear from facility managers in higher education, athletics, healthcare, hospitality, and corporate campuses every week.
Wayfinding Confidence
First-time visitors often arrived unsure whether they were at the right building or office—especially at the admissions entrance, where confidence matters most.
Stronger Indoor Branding
Exterior signage was strong, but interior entryways lacked the visual identity needed to reinforce school pride the moment guests stepped inside.
Improved Safety
In the athletics building, an existing inset flooring solution had become a trip hazard and required temporary barriers, taking the space partially out of use.
High-Traffic Durability
Students, families, recruits, and staff move through these doors all day. The mats needed to look sharp—and stay that way—without constant maintenance.
Entrances aren’t just functional. They’re brand touchpoints. The fix needed to improve aesthetics, safety, and cleanliness in a single move—without disrupting daily campus operations.
THE SOLUTION
A Coordinated Mat Program, Designed Around the Brand
WaterHog Impressions HD — Custom-Printed Entrance Mats
The first impression for every visitor. A heavy-duty entrance mat with the WaterHog quarry-style surface, custom-printed with the LaGrange shield and wordmark. WaterHog Impressions scrapes dirt, traps moisture, and shows up across multiple campus entrances in different colorways—keeping interior floors presentable through the busiest visitor hours.
SuperScrape™ Impressions — Athletics Exterior Entries
Built for the toughest doorways. The athletics facility sees cleats, equipment carts, weather, and a steady stream of recruits and families. SuperScrape Impressions delivers an aggressive scraping surface in a custom-printed format, so the doormat does the hard work and still looks like a recruiting tool.
DigiPrint™ HD — Custom Lobby Rugs & Area Pieces
A branded moment beyond the front door. DigiPrint HD is the high-resolution print line for lobby rugs, department area pieces, and seating-area branding. The LaGrange Department of Nursing rug uses it to layer the shield with stethoscopes and other clinical iconography—turning a waiting area into a visible expression of the department.
DigiPrint™ HD Custom Shape — When a Rectangle Isn’t the Right Move
A shape that matches the brand. The Custom Shape variant takes the same high-resolution DigiPrint HD print and cuts the mat itself to any outline—a shield, a mascot silhouette, a banner, a state, or any drawn shape. On campus, LaGrange used it to put the institutional shield front and center in a building entrance, creating a branded moment that a standard rectangle simply couldn’t deliver.
A Flush Inlay Solution — Athletics Trip Hazard, Solved
Safety without losing the brand. A custom inlay mat replaced the existing trip hazard in the athletics building with a durable, flush surface, installed quickly and without taking the entry offline. The fix removed the temporary barriers—and added another opportunity for branding in the process.
The Two-Mat System, In Practice
Look closely at the athletics building and you’re seeing a textbook two-mat install: an aggressive scraper outside the door (SuperScrape Impressions) plus a high-resolution branded mat just inside the lobby. The scraper does the dirty work outside; the wiper finishes the job inside—and doubles as a brand moment. That pairing keeps interior floors cleaner with less daily maintenance. THE RESULTS
A Polished, Confident Arrival—Campus-Wide
What changed, in short:
- Visitors immediately know they’re in the right place—clearer wayfinding from the threshold in.
- School pride is reinforced indoors, not just on the exterior signage.
- A real safety issue in athletics was solved, with no daily disruption.
- Interior floors stay cleaner in the highest-traffic buildings on campus.
- Recruits and families experience a more professional, polished campus.
WHY THIS MATTERS BEYOND HIGHER EDUCATION
Any High-Traffic Entrance Is a Brand Touchpoint
LaGrange’s story is built around a college campus, but the underlying problem is universal. Anywhere visitors arrive—clinic lobbies, hotel front desks, corporate headquarters, retail flagships, K–12 schools, gym and recreation facilities, government buildings—the front door is doing brand work whether you’ve designed it to or not.
A coordinated mat program turns that doorway into an asset: a wayfinding cue, a brand impression, a safer walking surface, and a frontline defense for the floors behind it. One mat is a doormat. A program is a first impression at scale.
